INFERNAL MASQUERADE WEBZINE (ENGLISH) 90/100

After their impressive EP “White Bed Sheet”, we were thrilled to know that Closed Room signed with Sun & Moon Records to release their self-titled debut album. As many of the band’s in this label, Closed Room is a very unique ensemble that mixes Trip-Hop with Post-Metal and some Shoegaze elements brilliantly and in their previous work has delivered very interesting and engaging tracks drawing comparisons to Amesoeurs and such bands.

Setting the mood with the Post-Metal influenced “Behind the Locked Door”, the band nicely established very high expectations for a very unique sounding release. This track reminds us a bit of the experimental side of bands like Sigh and Ephel Duath. Things turn dark with the Blackgaze riffing of “Tempted to Illuminated”, then the ethereal vocals of Morena kick in and the whole atmosphere suddenly feels a bit different. This track is very well crafted and the contrast between the music and the vocals is just outstanding and works very well.

The atmospheric “Black Hall” borders more in Trip-Hop territory, but thanks to the vocal performance it keeps the listener engaged and very expectant of what is coming next from the band. Our absolute favorite song from this band is the electric “Fly to the Sunshine”. This track feels like Amesoeurs came back to life and recorded just one more song. The atmosphere is very exciting and the overall vibe of this track is just amazing. Truly one of the best songs we have heard in 2012.

After another weird Trip-Hop track with “In The Closed Room”, the band moves into new directions with the Jazzy “White Bed Sheet”, a song that feels a bit weird the first few listens, but then it really grows on you. The Post-Rock/Metal meets Jazz influences of “Winter Sun” make it quite an enjoyable piece that feels very relaxed and helps you clear out your head very easily. The oddest song in this release comes under the name of “Blue Velvet”, a track that combines Post-Black Metal sections with the trippy jazzy influences of previous tracks. This song sounds like a combination of Lifelover and Björk, very strange, but also very good.

Closing with an atmosphere piece, “Slowing Down Breathe (Part II)” and another weird trippy-heavy song “The Barrier”, this release delivers a very unique experience all across the board. If you are not afraid of experimental music, Closed Room delivers a very rewarding aural experience that involves plenty of different genres and interesting combinations of them.

CRUCIAL BLAST (ENGLISH)

One of the recent releases that we've picked up from Romanian label Valse Sinistre Production, Closed Room's self-titled debut is a strange mixture of atmospheric prog rock, black metal influences, gloom-pop and experimental trip hop from this Belarusian band. The label describes the album's sound as something that would appeal to fans of "Amesoeurs, Forgotten Woods, Ulver, David Lynch" and I can't really argue with that - there's a definite dreamy, black metal-influenced sound here that is reminiscent of bands like Alcest and Amesoeurs, and the female vocals are pretty gorgeous, but there's also a weirder experimental streak at work here that takes the album into passages of Voivodian discordance and displays a weird style of songwriting that ventures into some highly abstract and unpredictable song arrangements.
What I was really reminded of when this album first started up is the later Gathering albums, whose mix of trip-hop and metallic heaviness is somewhat comparable to Closed Room's haunting boom-bap soundscapes, but imagine that If_then_else-era Gathering sound melded with droning blackened tremolo guitars and the occasional blast of full-on frostbitten black metal, and you'll be close. Despite those latter elements, black metal diehards will find this far too poppy for their tastes, most likely, but for those who dig stranger, artier experiments with black metal/gloom-rock genre-bending, this is interesting stuff. There are some really haunting trip-hop style passages that emerge on songs like "Black Hall", as big Massive Attack-style beats creep beneath eerie spoken word samples, waves of restrained guitar noise and ominous piano melody and the singer's wailing vocals. Other tracks venture into a kind of deformed art-pop like "Fly To The Sunrise", which almost sounds like Velocity Girl or some other early 90s girl-fronted jangle pop outfit, but with guitars that are just slightly more bent and darkened, a thread of dissonant ugliness running through the song even as it locks its super-catchy hook into your head - and it's then that the band suddenly erupts into blastbeating drums and a ripping black metal riff, still playing that same catchy hook but transforming it into a killer icy black metal blast even while the singer keeps singing in that sweet melodic voice. Its an awesome blast of blackened, miserable pop.
There's a few more of the trip-hop style songs on here, "In The Closed Room" with its weird robotic-demon vocals and bluesy piano/guitar, followed by the weird dissonant nightmarishness and mutant R&B strains of "White Bed Sheet". Other songs unwind into a kind of lush dark prog rock ("Winter Sun") flecked with jazzy clarinet and more of that soaring Floydian blues shred, or the weirdly jazzy black metal of "Blue Velvet" where disturbing Nattramn-esque shrieks suddenly appear alongside clanking industrial weirdness and spacey fx-drenched guitars. Classical piano and strings appear on "Slowing Down Breathe", strafed with blasts of radio static, and the album closes with the experimental, grim trip-hop of "The Barrier", where more of those shuffling jazzy rhythms are met with droning distorted guitar, gradually morphing into one final blast of crushing black metal.
Like I said, this isn't a black metal album, but black metal listeners with a taste for weirder, more experimental kinds of rock might find this to be as interesting and infectious as I did. Everything that I've picked up from Valse Sinistre looks great, with really eye-catching packaging designs, and the same goes for this, packaged in an attractive glossy digipack that comes with an eight page booklet, both highlighted by A.N. 23's evocative photography. Limited to five hundred copies.

Pragnąłem do recenzji tego dziwoląga stworzyć ciekawą przedmowę. Chcieć nie zawsze znaczy móc - odpuszczam więc, i tym samym gubiąc plan recenzji - rzucam konkrety bez wstępu.
Rzecz to niebywała, zawiła i skomplikowana. Płyta ta. Mylące wokalizy panny wzniosłej, co skojarzenia niesie wyraziste z Liv Kristine, szemrząca gitara brudząca tu i ówdzie, niby prędko niby wyboiście. Mylące. Gubiące. Skomplikowane.
Brudne i jazgotliwe, pełne pasji i przestrzeni („In the Closed Room”). Co ja na to? Kapitalna sprawa!

Minden a hallgatón múlik.

LUNAR PSYCHOZIS (ENGLISH)

I could probably write an effective enough review just discussing the photos and design work within this digipak and how Felicia Simion's beautiful and brilliant photos totally mirrored a lot of the atmosphere within this debut release from, Closed Room. I will however, save you from that rant, and tell you more about the music of this interesting band from Belarus.

Existing within no concrete and definite genre, Closed Room presents a very experimental and atmospheric journey throughout this debut that runs the gamut between melodic metal, trip-hop, ambient, post-rock and a very miniscule amount of black metal, naturally with a serious degree of darkness and melancholy behind it all too. Songs like 'Tempted to Illuminated' sound similar to the French band Amesoeurs with the lead female vocals or even slightly Katatonia-ish at times, while 'Black Hall' is an interesting ambient/trip-hop piece with a female recalling a story to someone that at least to me reminds me of some of Ulver's work or even Akira Yamaoka's work on the Silent Hill games. 'Fly to the Sunrise' is one of the catchier tunes, again with passionate lead female vocals, the song has an odd sort of post metal/indie/shoegaze sort of thing going that's quite admirable, while 'In the Closed Room' is cinematic as all get out and brings back the trip-hop vibes strongly, though with a variety of samples that may or may not be from a movie. 'White Bed Sheet' is absolute Akira Yamaoka worship and I freakin' love it, whereas 'Winter Sun' takes on some weird jazz vibes that are surely different, but relaxing and engaging all the same. 'Blue Velvet' is where things go all awkward and suddenly its total post-black metalness, which completely alters the record, but its not bad. The album concludes with a melodic piano/synth/experimental piece called, 'Slowing Down Breathe (Part II)' and 'The Barrier,' which is more Silent Hill soundtrack-ish sounding stuff at first, but eventually adds some black metal aspects.

Closed Room definitely treads on uneven ground on this release and offers up a meaty amount of diverse music, but if you happen to be an eclectic listener fancying stuff like Amesoeurs, Ulver, Netra, Forgotten Woods and Mr Yamaoka's work then you'll probably want to check this one out.

KULTURTERRORISMUS (GERMANY)

ROCKHARD (GERMANY)
